Ferreira do Zêzere

Instituted in the 16th century, the Águas Belas Pillory, classified as property of public interest, located in Ferreira do Zêzere, is the material representation of the power of the ancient Morgados of Águas Belas.

The construction dates back to the Middle Ages, although nowadays few pillories remain, since during the reign of King Manuel II many were destroyed.

Today, just a historical landmark, in other times the pillories were a symbol of local power, decentralization and jurisdiction. However, there are those who refute this idea and suggest that they were simply used as a landmark of an urban center, where locals would gather in the event of some important event.
