Near the small town of Pombeira, a few kilometers from Ferreira do Zêzere, it is on the top of the hill that we can find the Chapel of São Pedro de Castro, a Gothic-inspired temple. There is no certainty about its construction date, but it is known that it was rebuilt in the 15th century and that it was built over an ancient Roman castle that was destroyed by the Visigoths. In its rebuilding some elements of the primitive temple were used.
This Gothic monument was erected in the name of St. Peter because it is believed that he has rid the region of a plague that affected the corn, currently a feast is celebrated annually in the month of May.
Classified as public interest, inside this chapel you can find a five-century-old stone image of São Pedro de Castro and oil-painted boards referring to miracles attributed to the saint between the 17th century and the 19th century.
It is high up in the mountains, surrounded by vegetation, that this chapel, full of traces of other cultures, looks out over the valleys of the Zêzere River. The silence and inevitable peace that this place maintains, ends up resulting in much more than what our eyes see.
