Ferreira do Zêzere

Located in the Parish of Areias and Pias, the Avecasta Cave is a vaulted cave whose human presence dates back to the Bronze Age.

The excavations began in the 80’s and have been revealing a great natural wealth. For this reason archaeologists José Mateus and Paula Queiroz have been studying the cave since the end of the 20th century. The studies have revealed that a village once existed inside this cave. This theory is supported by traces of ancient structures such as walls, hearths, and pits, which extend beyond the surrounding area, preserved by layers of clay.

Through archaeological stripping and dismantling, it is possible today to know that the cave has suffered several destructive events during its history, such as fires and earthquakes, theorized from sediments that were subterranean, preserved in the layers of mud over the centuries. Despite all the events that have deteriorated the cave, what fascinates researchers the most is the high degree of preservation that requires a slower and more careful study.

The visit to the site, created by archaeological explorers José Mateus and Paula Queiroz, is conditioned.

An open-air monument with much discovered so far and much more to be discovered.
